Topic Description

"In this workshop that blends animation creativity with digital exhibition design, we will delve into the theme of 'Memory and Forgetting,' as well as explore how modern technological means can be used to protect and preserve cultural heritage. On one hand, participants will learn through the 'Vanishing Past – Animation Creativity Workshop' how to use animation art to capture cultural symbols in urban transformation, such as gradually disappearing telephone poles, public phone booths, and old-fashioned metal mailboxes. Through animation narrative techniques, participants will explore the social changes and cultural significance behind these elements, while fostering critical thinking and innovative capabilities, reconstructing and interpreting personal and collective memories in an animated form.

On the other hand, the workshop will focus on virtual curation and digital exhibition design, exploring how technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 3D modeling can be innovatively applied to showcase and disseminate red culture. Participants will learn how to design interactions and optimize user experience in digital spaces to enhance the immersive experience and understanding of red culture for audiences. Ultimately, participants will be able to design creative and culturally profound digital exhibition plans, contributing to the inheritance and innovation of cultural heritage. Through this interdisciplinary learning and practice, the workshop aims to inspire creativity in participants while deepening their understanding and respect for history and culture."

Topic Description

Focusing on the theme of “Memory and Forgetting”, the “Disappearing Once - Animation Creative Workshop” recreates through animation the cultural symbols that have disappeared in the course of urban change. For example, with the upgrading of urban infrastructures, power and communication lines are gradually buried underground, and traditional utility poles have disappeared in many cities. These poles were once part of the urban landscape, but now they have become memories of the past; with the popularization of cell phones, the public phone booths that once dotted the streets have gradually disappeared. They used to be a tool for people to contact each other in times of emergency, and the old tin mailboxes, street newsstands, etc., which used to be common on the streets, are now only seen in a few places, and have become more of a witness to history. ...... Participants will explore the social changes and cultural significance behind these memory fragments through animation narrative techniques, while at the same time Cultivate critical thinking and creativity to reconstruct and interpret individual and collective memories in the form of creative animation.

Workshop Objective:

The “Disappearing Once - Animation Creative Workshop” is a comprehensive program that integrates exploration, expression, reflection and practice. Using animation as a medium, the program explores and recreates fragments of memories that have faded from people's view with the change of time. In the process of creation, participants will use visual language to tell stories about memory and forgetfulness, and explore the social motivation, cultural significance, and personal emotions behind these fragments of memory, so as to cultivate a profound ability of artistic expression and a keen sense of cultural insight.

Expected outcomes of the workshop:

1. Deepen creators' insight into social realities and cultivate their ability to create healing and truthful works through the medium of animation. 2. Focus on the rapid pace of modernization of the motherland, examining its strengths and potential drawbacks in order to deepen the strategy for sustainable development.
