Workshop(1):Inclusive Smart Home Design for the Silver Hair Community

Tutor

Liu Yuanyuan, Associate Professor and Doctoral Supervisor, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics

Language: Chinese

Keywords

Inclusive Design, Aging Product Innovation, Sensory Compensation, Smart Home

Expected output

Visual Design, Product Design, Interaction Design, Silver Hair Design, Service Design

Topic Description

Inclusive Design is “a design methodology and process for making mainstream products or services accessible to as many users as possible without adaptation or special design”. Inclusive design ensures that a product/service does not demand more from individuals than they are capable of in a given environment, and calls for the product or service system to require as little as possible of the user's ability to use it, thus reducing the system's exclusion of the user, and allowing the user's ability to meet the system's demands on him or her.
The aging of the population is becoming more and more serious, and building a society suitable for the elderly to live in is something that every one of us can participate in and need to work for. The physical functions of the elderly decline more or less with age, and the use of products and services by the elderly is closely related to their own abilities (e.g., sensory abilities-visual and auditory, motor abilities-movement, extension, and dexterity, and cognitive abilities-communication and intelligence). This topic is approached from the perspective of cross-sensory compensation to empower (compensate/enhance users' abilities) older users and enhance the product usage experience.
The workshop will introduce tools and methods related to inclusive service design, as well as research on inclusive design from the Center for Engineering Design at the University of Cambridge, UK. We hope to work with the workshop participants to innovate aging products/services through design tools, so that more people can understand and pay attention to the needs of the aging population, and help the elderly enjoy the smart home.

Workshop Objectives:
1.Promote the concept of inclusive design: understand the basic concepts, methods and tools of inclusive design, and help participants master how to apply them to the design of smart home products for silver-haired people.
2. Enhance design skills: through practical exercises and case studies, enhance participants' practical skills in the design of products and services for the elderly.
3. Innovate aging products and services: Stimulate participants' creativity to design innovative smart home products and services to enhance the quality of life of elderly users.
Expected outcomes of the workshop:
1. Design program: propose a user-centered smart home product design program and present their design works.
2. Program promotion: improve the design program, participate in relevant design competitions or contact relevant enterprises to promote the design program.
