Visual Design: Visual Presentation of the Science and Technology Axis, Product Design: Cultural and Creative Works on the Theme of the Science and Technology Axis, Interaction Design: Interaction Design of the Science and Technology Axis Exhibit, Spatial Design: Narrative and Curatorial Design of the Science and Technology Axis, Design of Iconic Structures for Outdoor Plazas

Topic Description

Beijing's central axis, also known as the “spine of the capital”, brings together a large amount of historical and cultural heritage, as well as many related historical and cultural exhibitions. However, there are no venues involved in science and technology exhibitions on the central axis. Beijing Science Center, as the only provincial-level, comprehensive science and technology museum in Beijing, needs to have the responsibility and commitment to innovate in the heritage. While inheriting the characteristics of Beijing's ancient capital, the “Science and Technology Central Axis” will innovate the content and form of the exhibition, break the predicament of “one side of a thousand museums” in science and technology museums, explore the inheritance and development of science and technology culture in Beijing, and plan a “Science and Technology Center” exhibition with unique characteristics of the capital, which will be centered on the scientific and technological elements along the central axis of Beijing. The “Science and Technology Central Axis” exhibition is unique to Beijing.
The content of the exhibition involves the design of the outdoor landmark structures of the Beijing Science Center, the curatorial narrative of the theme of “Science and Technology Central Axis” and the design of the exhibition items, which include the time and space of the central axis (combining the 24 solar terms with the architecture of the central axis), the beauty of the central axis (the color of lacquer paintings of the ancient buildings and the light of the Temple of Heaven's Imperial Vault), and the force of the central axis (the jackknife of the Arrow Tower in the Qianmen Gate, and the force of the arch of the dipper), Sound of the Central Axis (Resonance of the Bell Tower, Mystery of the Echo Wall), Water of the Central Axis (Drainage of the Forbidden City), and Rhythm of the Central Axis (Beijing Rainbird).

Workshop Objectives:
Understand the significance and value of Beijing's central axis, combine it with the theme of “Technological Central Axis”, explore the inheritance and development of technological culture in Beijing, and plan an exhibition of “Technological Central Axis” with unique characteristics of the capital city, focusing on the technological elements of Beijing's central axis.

Expected outcomes of the workshop (different themes are available):
1. develop a narrative line for the “Science and Technology Axis” exhibition by combining the technological elements of Beijing's central axis, and complete the design of the exhibition space and cultural and creative design. 2. complete a separate exhibition program for the “Science and Technology Axis” exhibition.
2. complete a separate interactive design program for the exhibition, such as combining the 24 solar terms with the architecture of the Central Axis to complete the design and creation of the theme.
3. Combined with the positioning of the Beijing Science Center, complete the iconic public art design of the Beijing Science Center Plaza with keywords such as “science, technology, life, dream, central axis”.

Workshop (5):Geometric modeling and visualization based on forms in natural environments

Tutor

Biljana Jović, Professor Dr. Biljana Jović received his Master of Science degree in 2006 and Doctor of Technical Sciences degree in 2012, specializing in Architecture and Urban Planning.

Co-Tutors

Ziyao Li, Assistant Professor, specializing in user experience design with a focus on the user as the core concept, currently teaching product design at Gengdan.

Language: English

Keywords

Biomorphology, Geometry, Human and Nature, Sustainable Design

Expected output

Product Design, Interaction Design

Topic Description

Geometric modeling and visualization based on forms found in natural environments, all in line with the goals of sustainable development. Our workshops are dedicated to exploring and applying the design principles of bio-geometry and bio-graphics, with the aim of fostering creativity and innovative thinking, while emphasizing environmental protection and sustainable development. Through our collaboration with students from the University of Belgrade (Serbia) in the Creative Platform Geometry Workshop, we have accumulated a wealth of experience and results. The workshop has always been active and has made significant progress since its inception in 2012. In addition, we have further advanced the field by co-organizing the workshop with GAD students in 2023.

Workshop Goals:
Students worked in teams and on individual projects to accomplish a number of innovative conceptual solutions for biodesign. The final results were presented in the form of posters and 3D models, presenting their unique insights and achievements in geometric modeling, visualization and sustainable design. These works not only demonstrate the students' professional skills, but also their deep understanding of the natural environment and commitment to sustainable development.

Expected outcomes of the workshop:
1. through learning the basics of bio-ecology to produce human-centered design solutions for sustainable public facilities or products to enhance citizens' experience and quality of life in public areas.
2. Through learning the characteristics and application of sustainable materials, produce visual models such as posters and 3D models, express the concept of sustainable development rationally through language, apply the principles of visual communication, and express the design concept effectively through graphics and images.
