Topic Description

As more and more designers develop a consensus to design for the disadvantaged, accessible design has been applied to many aspects of life scenarios. Accessible design is a disability-friendly design that addresses the differences in physical abilities and focuses on the special needs of people with disabilities and the elderly, but not just for them. People can experience significant changes in their abilities in special situations, resulting in temporary and situational disabilities, such as driving that takes up visual attention resources or domestic tasks that involve hand injuries. Good accessibility design not only allows special groups of users to interact with products normally but also provides a better experience for ordinary people with impairment situations. Designing for people with permanent disabilities may seem like a major limitation, but the resulting designs can actually benefit many more people.

This project, in collaboration with the China Disabled Persons' Aids Centre, focuses on 'Designing for Accessible Daily Living', looking at how design can transform the experience of everyday household products through an inclusive perspective of culture, age and physical ability among Asian people. Based on sensory and psychological compensation, the project helps to improve the accessibility, ease of learning and safety of users' interaction with products and services from the levels of sensory acquisition, thought processing, emotional reflection and behavioural interaction, helping disadvantaged people to live barrier-free and re-socialise through the power of design.
